From ‘Metropolitan Adelaide: a short history’ by Susan Marsden

www.sahistorians.org.au/175/bm.doc/**adelaide****metro**-area-heritage.doc

Two sections

Adelaide was divided by Colonel Light into two sections, one on each side of the Torrens and surrounded by parklands. South Adelaide (commonly called Adelaide) comprised 700 one-acre blocks (‘town acres’), and North Adelaide 342 town acres. In South Adelaide, a central square (Victoria Square) was balanced by four smaller squares; upper North Adelaide had another central square (Wellington Square).
The plan predetermines to a large extent, contemporary town planning principles … nothing of this scale and magnificence was to be seen in Australia again until the planning of the National Capital by Walter Burley Griffin.[i] This city layout is thus in itself of great heritage significance, not only in the South Australian, but also in the national context.
external image City%2520Parklands%2520map.jpg

The Surveyor-General’s layout extended in more general terms beyond the parklands to the surrounding country sections. The outer edge of the parklands was bounded by terraces, and a grid pattern of sections of varying sizes was drawn over the area beyond, with roads 1 chain wide between sections.
This was the framework within which suburban subdivision of individual sections and the insertion of minor streets have taken place. Thus the original road and section patterns have been ‘fossilized in the landscape’.[i]

The Gentry

The lives of the South Australian ‘gentry’ straddled city, suburb and country, with a marked effect on the region’s heritage. If in the eastern colonies such gentry preferred to live on rural estates, in South Australia they usually came to live in the city or nearby on ‘country’ acres convenient to town. Their woolclips financed the construction of their deliberately imposing mansions in Brougham Place or East Terrace, or beyond. Urban wealth was added to rural income with some city landlordism or suburban subdivision.

Sometimes, the rise was meteoric to a house appropriate to one’s acquired status: five years after a German boundary rider, Charles Rasp, had pegged a mining claim in the desolate area (Broken Hill) near Silverton in New South Wales, he possessed a mansion in Medindie to which he gave the Aboriginal name for Broken Hill, Willyama.

Historic Houses

From Wikipedia: Medindie is an upper middle class suburb, and is mainly residential; Medindie contains many fine homes, and a number of historic mansions:

  • Willyama“, (the Aboriginal name for Broken Hill), at 12 The Avenue was named so by Charles Rasp, the boundary rider who pegged a mining claim that became Broken Hill, after he bought it in 1887 from Oscar Görger, a local doctor/surgeon;[3][4]
  • The Briars” at 15 Briar Avenue, built for George Hawker in 1856, is now the McBride Hospital; and there are many fine houses along Robe Terrace.[5][6][7]
  • In 1884 the Brown sisters established The Wilderness School, a private school for girls. The school moved to Northcote Terrace in 1885, to its current location on Northcote Terrace in 1893, and acquired its current name in 1918.

The Myrtles, the historic Medindie, Adelaide mansion has been sold for $5 million to a Chinese buyer with local connections.
The most expensive residential sale in SA history is Glenelg’s historic Stormont mansion, which sold for $6.5 million in 2010.
Last year’s highest residential sale price in Adelaide was 11 Robe Terrace, Medindie, a single storey 1900 home on almost 4000 square metres which fetched $4,917,000 in January 2013.

Edna Walling Garden at 11-13 Briar Avenue Medindie

This garden is the only example of the work of Edna Walling in South Australia.

The design of this Garden is based on free flowing curves. The drive sweeps around to the front door, continuing on to the garages in a sweeping S shape. The front lawn is palette shaped, bordered with dense plantings of trees and shrubs. Interest in the garden is created by the use of differing leaf colours and textures.
This Garden has been carefully maintained to retain the original concept with the exception of one tree which was removed when it became too large and by replacement of the tennis court with a broad sweep of lawn.
